ASC commits to clarifying the use of any acronym or identity term where appropriate. We also commit to asking individuals to self-identify to establish equitable and inclusive language.<\/p><p>It is our intent to examine, honor and understand the communities we exist within, and apply\/use terms utilized and preferred by those communities.\u00a0We encourage readers to do the same.<\/p><p><strong>Please note this list will change and evolve over time as our community changes and evolves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6dc4611 flex-horizontal-align-default flex-horizontal-align-tablet-default flex-horizontal-align-mobile-default flex-vertical-align-default flex-vertical-align-tablet-default flex-vertical-align-mobile-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6dc4611\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What We Say<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1477ff8 flex-horizontal-align-default flex-horizontal-align-tablet-default flex-horizontal-align-mobile-default flex-vertical-align-default flex-vertical-align-tablet-default flex-vertical-align-mobile-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1477ff8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>AAPI: <\/strong>Acronym for Asian American Pacific Islander.<\/p><p><strong>ALAANA:\u00a0<\/strong>Acronym that<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>references people of\u00a0African, Latin-a\/o\/x\/e, Asian, Arab, and\/or Native American descent and\u00a0organizations whose primary intentions, practices and missions are by, for and about ALAANA artists, cultures and communities.\u00a0<strong><em>ASC uses this because, like our peers at Grantmakers in the Arts, we understand that many believe \u201cpeople of color\u201d conflates together entire groups of people as a contrast to white, resulting in a continued centering of whiteness as the norm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>BIPOC:<\/strong>\u00a0Acronym for\u00a0Black, Indigenous\u00a0and\u00a0People of Color.\u00a0The term\u00a0highlights\u00a0the relationship to whiteness that Indigenous and Black (African Americans) people have, which shapes the experiences of and relationship to white supremacy for all people of color within a U.S. context.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Black:\u00a0<\/strong>A\u00a0racial,\u00a0ethnic\u00a0or cultural\u00a0identifier that\u00a0conveys\u00a0an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among\u00a0those\u00a0who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa.\u00a0<strong><em>ASC follows the lead of the Associated Press in using and capitalizing \u201cBlack\u201d instead of African American to convent \u201c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Cultural Competence:<\/strong>\u00a0Loosely defined as the ability to understand,\u00a0appreciate\u00a0and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one\u2019s own.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Cultural Equity:<\/strong>\u00a0Cultural Equity\u00a0embodies the values, beliefs,\u00a0policies\u00a0and practices that ensure all people are represented in the\u00a0development of arts, science, history and heritage policy;\u00a0support of artists and cultural creators;\u00a0nurturing of accessible, relevant and innovative venues for expression; and,\u00a0just distribution of programmatic, financial and informational resources.\u00a0<strong><em>ASC\u2019s Community Investment Committee, composed of seven ASC Board members and five non-members broadly representative of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community crafted a working definition of cultural equity to guide ASC\u2019s work, creating a framework to set organizational policies and practices and providing external visibility for the organization\u2019s commitment to cultural equity.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>DEI:<\/strong> Acronym for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.<\/p><p><strong>Disabled:\u00a0<\/strong>Also\u00a0\u201cDisability Status\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cCommunities with Disabilities.\u201d\u00a0Disability is a term used to define factors that limit significant life activities or experiences considered to be typical among individuals who do not experience a disability. Such restrictions may be physical or mental and may be permanent or temporary. Some examples of disability: vision\/hearing impairment, mobility impairment, mental disorder, autism, etc. <strong><em>ASC\u2019s practice is to not mention a disability unless it is essential to what is being communicated. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Equity:\u00a0<\/strong>The guarantee of fair treatment, access,\u00a0opportunity\u00a0and advancement while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Ethnicity:\u00a0<\/strong>Refers to a group of people of the same nationality or land of origin who share a distinct and\/or common culture. Typically understood as something we acquire, or self-ascribe, based on factors like where we live or the culture we share with others.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Gender\/Gender Identity:\u00a0<\/strong>Gender identity refers to socially constructed roles, behavior, activities, and attributes that a particular society considers appropriate for men and women. Gender identity is also an individual\u2019s self-conception, as distinguished from biological sex, which is based solely on physical characteristics assigned at birth. In addition to man\/male, woman\/female, and non-binary (among other options), there is also the potential qualifier of \u201ctransgender,\u201d meaning one\u2019s gender identity does not match one\u2019s assigned biological sex, and \u201ccisgender,\u201d which means one\u2019s gender identity does match one\u2019s assigned biological sex. \u201cGender nonconforming\u201d or \u201cgender fluid\u201d is another identifier, used to indicate that one doesn\u2019t adhere to stereotypical understandings of gender expression or roles.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Historically Excluded\/Marginalized Group:<\/strong> Any group of people that have been historically excluded from full rights, privileges and opportunities in a society or organization.\u00a0<strong><em>See \u201cUnderinvested\/Underrepresented Community.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Immigrant Status:\u00a0<\/strong>People who live permanently in the United States, whether the person is a non-immigrant, an immigrant or a non-permanent resident.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Latin-a\/o\/x\/e:\u00a0<\/strong>Latino and Latina, as well as\u00a0the\u00a0gender-neutral Latinx and\u00a0Latine, refer to people of Latin American descent.\u00a0<strong><em>ASC refers to individuals by their country of descent instead of one of these identifiers whenever possible. Based on research and feedback from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, when referencing groups of individuals of Latin American descent, ASC uses Latino.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>LGBTQ+\/LGBTQIA:\u00a0<\/strong>Acronyms\u00a0for Lesbian,\u00a0Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,\u00a0Queer or\u00a0Questioning,\u00a0Plus\/Lesbian,\u00a0Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,\u00a0Queer or\u00a0Questioning,\u00a0Intersex and Asexual.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Pronouns:\u00a0<\/strong>Refers to the gender pronouns\u00a0(\u201che\/him\/his\u201d; \u201cshe\/her\/hers\u201d; \u201cthey\/them\/theirs\u201d; etc.) a person uses.\u00a0Often used during introductions, this is becoming more common as a standard practice.\u00a0<strong><em>To promote inclusivity, ASC staff members include their pronouns in their email signatures. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Race:<\/strong>\u00a0The idea that the\u202fhuman\u202fspecies\u202fis divided into distinct groups based on inherited physical and behavioral differences.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Sexual Orientation:\u00a0<\/strong>An individual\u2019s physical and\/or emotional attraction to another individual. A person\u2019s sexual orientation is separate from that person\u2019s gender identity.
