He shared that in his application for a 2024 ASC Creative Renewal Fellowship.<\/p><p>He added, \u201cI decided to step away from the constraints of a 9-5 and pursue a career as a full-time artist beginning in 2024. The Creative Renewal Fellowship is a restorative opportunity that will contribute not only to my understanding of my voice as a poet, but also to expanding my reach as an ambassador of the arts in Charlotte.\u201d<\/p><p>DIA has support from a wide range of impressive poets in the Carolinas \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/jakisheltongreen.com\/\"><strong>Jaki Shelton Green<\/strong><\/a>, North Carolina\u2019s poet laureate; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenisredmond.com\/\"><strong>Glenis Redmond<\/strong><\/a>, the poet laureate for Greenville, South Carolina; <a href=\"https:\/\/jwardpoetry.com\/home\"><strong>Jay Ward<\/strong><\/a>, Charlotte\u2019s poet laureate; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angelogeter.com\/\"><strong>Angelo Geter<\/strong><\/a>, Rock Hill\u2019s poet laureate.\u00a0<\/p><p>A list of themes his poetry deals with is lengthy, too \u2013 the rise and fall of athletes of color, grief as a reaction to the abuse of power and authority, mass incarceration, the psychology of parenting.<\/p><p>His influences? It\u2019s another long list that includes \u201ccomic book mythology, theological imagination and contemplation, poet and performance artist Saul Williams, writer Shel Silverstein, artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and poet Nikki Giovanni.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>\u2018Power, passion and vision\u2019 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>The review committee liked what they saw in DIA\u2019s application. They awarded him the full $15,000 he requested.<\/p><p>Ivan Garnica, ASC\u2019s grant manager, said one reviewer wrote, \u201cI love the power, passion, vision and hope he expresses throughout the application.\u201d Another wrote: \u201cHis desire to grow and evolve his discipline in an innovative and interesting manner aligns completely with the stated goals and requirements of the grant.\u201d<\/p><p>DIA sought to use the grant exactly as intended. The <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandscience.org\/creative-renewal-fellowship\/\"><strong>program overview from the ASC website<\/strong><\/a> reads, \u201cThe Creative Renewal Fellowship is intended to provide a structured period of rest and creative exploration for vocational artists. The fellowship funds can be used for research, instruction, conferences, apprenticeships, travel or other experiences that help the recipient explore their creative journey.\u201d<\/p><p>Garnica said, \u201cThe purpose of this fellowship is to provide space for research, an apprenticeship, skill-building in a craft you really haven\u2019t developed. Many Fellows want to explore a completely new genre or medium and then weave what they\u2019ve learned into their regular discipline.\u201d<\/p><p>DIA was among them. He found the <a href=\"https:\/\/nwfilmforum.org\/festivals\/cadence-video-poetry-festival\/\"><strong>Cadence Video Poetry Festival<\/strong><\/a>, which offered workshops, panels and tutorials on how to construct video poems. That\u2019s the direction he wants to go next.<\/p><p><strong>From Rhinebeck to Chile<\/strong><\/p><p>DIA hoped to accomplish three primary things with his fellowship: Self-care, time to explore new poetic forms and an opportunity to meet and network with poets he admired. He curated his own course of study that the grant allowed him to pursue.<\/p><ul><li>A collective of Black poets he\u2019s been following \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/cavecanempoets.org\/\"><strong>Cave Canem Poets<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 hosted an event at the New School in New York \u2013 a lecture and a reading by the poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/jay-wright\"><strong>Jay Wright<\/strong><\/a>, past winner of Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships. \u201cI picked his mind about his journey as a poet, what he\u2019s doing now, how he\u2019s keeping it fresh,\u201d DIA said. \u201cIt was an amazing experience.\u201d<\/li><li>Self-care was the reason for DIA\u2019s visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eomega.org\/\"><strong>Omega Institute<\/strong><\/a> in Rhinebeck, New York for a workshop called \u201cReclaiming your Authentic Self\u201d led by theologian and poet <a href=\"https:\/\/drthema.com\/\"><strong>Thema Bryant, Ph.D.<\/strong><\/a> \u201cShe raised important questions that really resonated with me,\u201d DIA said. \u201cIn my writing, I\u2019m examining topics like tenderness, compassion, self-care, self-love, community,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I learned from Dr. Bryant and my fellow participants will have a direct impact on my work.\u201d<\/li><li>The grant also covered a series of virtual workshops. In one, <a href=\"https:\/\/traciemorris.com\/\"><strong>Tracie Morris<\/strong><\/a> discussed \u201chow you can poetically write about sensitive topics in a way that honors your experience and honors other individuals involved,\u201d DIA said.<\/li><li>He took online workshops from a poetry organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/twhpoetry.org\/\"><strong>The Watering Hole<\/strong><\/a> and \u201clearned from poets who are doing personal and vulnerable work.\u201d And the grant allowed him to join both the <a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/\"><strong>Academy of American Poets<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlottelit.org\/\"><strong>Charlotte Center for Literary Arts<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 or Charlotte Lit, for short. He\u2019s taken workshops there \u2013 one called Duplex that was led by the Pulitzer Prize-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerichobrown.com\/\"><strong>Jericho Brown<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 and plans to register for more.\u00a0<\/li><li>Lastly, he traveled to Santiago, Chile to work one-on-one with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/rigoberto-gonzalez\"><strong>Rigoberto Gonzalez<\/strong><\/a>, a much-lauded poet, professor, editor and book critic. \u201cI\u2019ve had my work critiqued before,\u201d DIA said. \u201cBut I\u2019d never had someone go through a body of work and show me how poems could be in dialogue with each other, how to structure a book in a logical sequence, how to create a voice between poems.\u201d He also studied Pablo Neruda, the great Chilean poet and diplomat, and visited some of his regular haunts.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>\u2018I\u2019ve grown bolder\u2019<br><\/strong>DIA loved being a pastor and an educator, but said, \u201cNeither role fed my creative passion. So, I\u2019m moving into a single career as a poet and performance artist. At some point, if it\u2019s the will of the universe, I\u2019ll go back into teaching and the intersection of theology and poetry. But in this season of life, I want to understand myself and my voice as a creative.\u201d<\/p><p>He\u2019s grown in his understanding. But he\u2019s gained even more than he set out to. One outcome of his fellowship is something DIA wasn\u2019t counting on.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ve grown bolder in approaching individuals across the country I admire,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll contact them to ask if we can schedule a call or Zoom. I want to find out: What\u2019s feeding your work right now? What\u2019s informing your work? How do you keep it fresh?\u201d<\/p><p>And he learned to treasure down time. When he was \u201ctri-vocational,\u201d there was rarely time for reflection. Now, he said, \u201cI feel recharged \u2013 physically, emotionally and spiritually \u2013 and not so stretched or consumed. For many of us creatives, we complete projects and check the box and then we\u2019re off to the next project.\u201d DIA\u2019s creative renewal allowed him time to reflect.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in a holding pattern of an \u2018emerging artist\u2019 for quite some time,\u201d he added. \u201cBut I feel something else percolating. I feel something opening up.
