ASC Invests $4.3 Million in Charlotte-Mecklenburg\u2019s Creative Community in FY24 <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 6, 2024) \u2013 ASC invested $4.3 million in Charlotte-Mecklenburg\u2019s creative sector in fiscal year 2023-2024 (FY24), including nearly $1.5 million to support the creative individuals and artists whose work is strengthening the cultural community. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
The investments, which support creative individuals and organizations of all sizes across ASC\u2019s grantmaking portfolio, were made possible by funding from Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte via the Infusion Fund and its generous donors. Funding from the North Carolina Arts Council, the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville, and individual donors to ASC also supported these investments.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
\u201cI am incredibly appreciative of the support ASC received that allowed us to make more than 640 awards to creative individuals and organizations who are using arts and culture to forge meaningful relationships with community and add to the vibrancy of our city and county,\u201d said ASC Interim President Adam Santalla Pierce. \u201cASC could not do any of this without our partnership with Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, the N.C. Arts Council, the suburban towns and our individual donors who share our belief that arts, culture and creativity play a critical role in creating a sense of belonging to a community.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Capping ASC\u2019s investments in Charlotte-Mecklenburg\u2019s creative community in FY24\u2014which closed June 30\u2014are the latest ASC Fellowships, SEED Grant and Cultural Vision Grant recipients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Five emerging artists are recipients of $10,000 ASC Emerging Creators Fellowships<\/a><\/strong>, which support creatives with 2-10 years\u2019 experience pursuing their creative practice as their primary occupation.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
Five mid-career creatives are recipients of $15,000 ASC Creative Renewal Fellowships<\/a><\/strong>, awarded to vocational creatives who have been pursuing a career in their discipline for at least 10 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
Eight local creatives received a combined $24,000 in <\/span>SEED Grants<\/a><\/strong>, which support Mecklenburg County creatives with opportunities for mentorship or are awarded to recognize the quality of their creative work. Each recipient was nominated by an ASC Fellow and will receive $3,000.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
Twenty-eight creative individuals and groups received a combined $432,000 in <\/span>Cultural Vision Grants<\/a><\/strong>, which respond to the community\u2019s interest in arts, science, history and heritage programming. The awards support arts and culture projects presented within Charlotte-Mecklenburg by Mecklenburg County-based individuals or nonprofits.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
\u201cCreatives and organizations are constantly seeking opportunities to pour into their crafts and into community,\u201d Santalla Pierce said. \u201cASC\u2019s investments demonstrate our support and commitment to create pathways for creatives to live their professions and ensure that organizations of all sizes have the resources they need for arts and culture to thrive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
The FY24 ASC <\/span>Emerging Creators Fellowship recipients<\/span><\/b> are:\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Cindy Clemens.<\/span><\/b> The writer will strengthen and expand her writing, networking and presentation skills through participation in national workshops and conferences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Nicole Driscoll.<\/span><\/b> The photographer and videographer will attend a residency at the Walkaway House in North Adams, MA, to create a photography\/video series.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Jennifer Geyer.<\/span><\/b> The dancer will use the fellowship to support the development and mastery of Afro-Cuban folkloric dance forms by serving as an apprentice with master instructor Marisol Blanco from Cuba.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Melvin D. Nix.<\/span><\/b> The visual artist will use the fellowship to participate in drawing and oil painting classes through the North Carolina Academy of Art.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Quisol.<\/span><\/b> With the fellowship, the music artist will establish Queens Collective as a songwriting and music production group to record new music with Charlotte artists.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
The FY24 ASC <\/span>Creative Renewal Fellowship recipients<\/span><\/b> are:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
de\u2019Angelo DIA.<\/span><\/b> DIA plans to use the award to learn a new creative expression and creative renewal, as a means of humanizing hope, through workshops with Penland School of Craft, the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and Charlotte Lit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Sarah Hayes Harkins<\/span><\/b>. The dancer plans to explore Argentine tango by training with world-class tango dancers and traveling to global tango destinations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Abel Jackson<\/span><\/b>. The visual artist will use the fellowship to\u202ftravel to Kenya to participate in an immersive exchange program which combines cultural exchange, community involvement, wildlife exploration and relaxation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Herman Nicholson.<\/span><\/b> The photographer plans to use the fellowship to immerse himself in learning the wet plate collodion process, a historic photographic technique.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
Sir Hodge.<\/span><\/b> The multidisciplinary creative director and producer will participate in an apprenticeship program under creative director Oghal\u00e9 Alex, based in London.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
